Step 1 — Fabric Selection
Poplin (broadcloth): fine plain weave, smooth face, 100–140 GSM — formal shirts, office and corporate. Oxford cloth: basket weave, more casual texture, 140–180 GSM — button-down casual shirts, Oxford OCBD. Twill: diagonal weave, 140–200 GSM, excellent drape — formal and business casual. End-on-end (fil-à-fil): alternating colour/white warp threads, 120–160 GSM — premium business casual. Thread count is expressed in yarn count (Ne): 40s yarn = mass retail; 80s = premium; 100s+ = luxury.

Step 3 — Cuff Specification
Standard barrel cuff: one or two buttons, most common. French / double cuff: folded back cuff requiring cufflinks — premium formal and luxury positioning. Convertible cuff: accepts either button or cufflinks. Cuff interfacing: specify fused (iron-on) or sewn-in — sewn-in is more durable but higher cost. Cuff width (from folded edge to seam): 6–7 cm standard; 7–8 cm for formal.
Step 4 — Placket and Front Band
Standard front placket: folded self-fabric strip; 3–3.5 cm wide for formal, 2.5 cm for casual. Fly front (covered placket): hidden button closure — premium formal, no visible button strip. French front (zero placket): buttons through a facing on the shirt front body — luxury positioning. Button: corozo or horn for premium; poly resin for mass retail. Button diameter: 11–13 mm standard; specify with tolerance.
Step 5 — Certification Requirements
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for EU, UK and USA retail. BSCI or Sedex for European retail and brand buyers. WRAP for US buyers. ISO 9001 for quality management (corporate uniform and institutional supply). GOTS for any organic cotton claimed shirt programmes. Specify required certifications in the sourcing quote form.
