Patient gowns from Pakistan are specified by four interdependent variables: closure system (fabric tie for general wards; snap or magnetic for low-mobility and elderly patients — magnetic closures are MRI-incompatible; wrap/kimono for imaging suites where MRI safety is required), fabric construction (100% cotton for NHS 71°C thermal disinfection; 65/35 poly-cotton for USA and private hospital 60°C wash programmes), GSM (130–160 GSM lightweight for tropical and air-conditioned environments; 160–200 GSM standard UK hospital grade), and size range (standard Adult S–XL plus bariatric XXXL for bariatric wards; paediatric 2–14 years for children's hospitals). Pakistan's hospital linen manufacturers produce patient gowns to NHS HTM 01-04 wash durability standards — verified performance after 50 cycles at 71°C — for UK and EU hospital supply. See the patient gown construction guide for the full closure system comparison before specifying.
Pakistan's hospital linen manufacturers produce patient gowns in all closure systems for NHS, EU, USA and Middle East hospital supply. Coordinated hospital linen programmes combining patient gowns with medical scrubs and huck towels are sourced through a single consolidated RFQ.
Step 1 — Select Closure System by Ward Type
| Closure | Best ward application | Limitation | MRI-safe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric ties (back-tie) | General admission, pre-op holding, day procedure | Difficult for low-mobility or elderly patients | Yes |
| Snap closure (plastic press stud) | ICU, high-dependency, post-operative, cardiac monitoring | Snap durability degrades through repeated high-temp washing | Yes (non-metal) |
| Magnetic closure | Geriatric, rehabilitation (non-MRI wards) | Not MRI-compatible | No |
| Wrap/kimono style | Middle East hospital, maternity, mental health | Higher fabric consumption — increased unit cost | Yes |
Step 2 — Specify Fabric Construction
For NHS supply: specify 100% cotton woven, minimum 120 GSM, meeting NHS HTM 01-04 thermal disinfection compliance (71°C wash, ≤3% shrinkage after 5 cycles). For EU and Middle East hospital supply: 50/50 poly-cotton, 120–160 GSM, wash at 60°C with colour fastness minimum Grade 4 ISO 105-C06. For paediatric and geriatric programmes: consider flannel (brushed cotton, 150–200 GSM) for softness and warmth — specify in the RFQ.
Step 3 — Size Range
Always specify a full size range for patient gown orders. For adult programmes: Standard (110×150 cm), Large (115×165 cm), Bariatric (120×180+ cm). Always include bariatric in initial orders — failure to specify bariatric results in ward complaints within the first week of supply. For mixed-programme hospitals: include Paediatric (65–90×100–120 cm) as a separate SKU, not a size variant of the adult gown.
Step 4 — Tie and Snap Durability Specification
For tie-closure patient gowns: specify tie fabric weight (minimum 100% cotton twill, 200 GSM for the tie ribbon) and seam construction (tie must be double-stitched at attachment point, not single-stitch). For snap-closure gowns: specify snap pull-force retention after 100 wash cycles at the specified temperature (minimum 15N pull force to open). Request wash-cycle durability test data from the manufacturer — not from catalogue specifications.
Step 5 — Certification Requirements
| Market | Required |
|---|---|
| UK NHS | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Sedex SMETA Level 2, NHS HTM 01-04 compliance documentation |
| EU hospital | OEKO-TEX Standard 100, BSCI, EN 14065 RABC at laundry facility |
| USA hospital | ISO 9001, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
| Middle East | ISO 9001, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, MOH registration for government tenders |
