Baby Overalls Construction Guide: Snaps, Adjustable Straps & Fabric Safety

Snap Size Requirements

The choking hazard threshold for small parts in children's garments is a cylinder with a diameter of 31.8 mm and a depth of 57.1 mm (USA CPSC "small parts cylinder"). A snap component that separates from the garment and passes entirely into this cylinder is classified as a choking hazard. In practice, metal snap components at the standard sizes used in infant garments (line 20–24) do not typically fail this test on the component itself, but individual separated parts — particularly the cap and the socket — must be tested at third-party labs for CPSIA-required children's products sold in the USA. EU requirements are tested to EN 71-1 physical and mechanical properties.

Pull-force testing: each snap must withstand a minimum 90 N (approximately 9 kg) pull-force without detachment. Specify this requirement in the Tech Pack and request the snap manufacturer's test certificate. The factory must conduct in-line pull testing on production samples.

Snap Placement

For infant overalls, the critical snap placements are: (1) crotch seam snaps for diaper access — specify the number of snaps (typically 3–5 depending on waist width), snap spacing and whether the crotch is completely snappable (preferred for easy diaper change); (2) shoulder or bib snaps for donning and doffing — especially important for head-through designs where the neckline is not elasticated.

Snap Material Safety

For EU market entry, any metal snap with skin contact must comply with EN 1811 nickel release limits (≤0.5 μg/cm²/week). Nickel-free snaps — either plastic composite snaps or nickel-free plated metal snaps — are the safest specification for EU market. Confirm nickel-free status with a test certificate from the snap supplier, not just a factory declaration. For USA market, nickel restrictions are less formalised but premium retailers often require nickel-free specification. Specify "nickel-free snaps, EN 1811 compliant" in the Tech Pack and request test certificates.

Adjustable Strap Construction

H-back configuration: Two parallel straps running from the bib front, over the shoulders, to the back waistband. The straps cross at the back in a crossed-back variant. H-back with parallel straps is the most stable configuration for infants who cannot yet walk; crossed-back distributes the weight differently.

Strap adjustment methods: Slide adjusters (ladder lock style) allow stepless adjustment along the strap length — specify the adjuster material (nickel-free metal or polymer) and minimum load rating. Button adjusters use multiple button holes along the strap with a corresponding button — simpler but with fixed adjustment increments. For garments from newborn through 24 months, specify at least 3 cm of adjustment range.

Button specification on straps: Any button used for strap adjustment on garments for children under 36 months must be securely attached to pass a pull test (minimum 90 N for EU, comparable for USA). Buttons smaller than 18 mm diameter present a choking hazard if detached and should not be specified on infant garments.

Front Pocket Construction

Bib pocket: A patch pocket on the front bib panel is the most common detail. Specify pocket width and depth, top edge finish (turned and topstitched), and whether corners are reinforced with bartacks. Bartacks at pocket corners are standard on denim overalls; optional on softer constructions.

Side pockets: Patch pockets at hip level are common on toddler sizes (18M+) but less practical on infant sizes where they interfere with diaper access. Welt pockets are less common on baby overalls due to construction complexity and cost.

Denim for Baby Overalls

Denim at standard mill weight (280–320 GSM) is too stiff and heavy for infant wear. Baby denim must be specified at reduced weight (180–240 GSM) and pre-washed with softening treatment. The pre-washing removes starch and sizing while the garment wash (stone, enzyme or chemical) softens the fabric texture. Specify: (1) GSM target after washing, (2) minimum softness requirement (can be described by handfeel or a wash-softened swatch reference), (3) OEKO-TEX Class 1 on the washed garment — the wash chemicals must be included in the scope.

Cotton Jersey Overalls

Jersey overalls (single jersey or interlock) are the most comfortable construction for the youngest infant sizes (newborn through 12 months) because the fabric stretches and moves with the infant without restriction. Specify 160–200 GSM for structural integrity while maintaining softness. Jersey overalls are the easiest to dress the infant in — critical for a product category where ease of use is a key retail selling point.

Corduroy Overalls

Corduroy is a wale-woven fabric with a distinctive ridged pile. For baby overalls, fine-wale corduroy (14-wale or finer) is appropriate — coarser wales are too stiff. The premium positioning of corduroy in UK and European gift retail makes it a relevant fabric for seasonal collections.

Size Range and Diaper Allowance

Standard infant overalls size run: Newborn (up to 4 kg), 0–3M, 3–6M, 6–9M, 9–12M, 12–18M, 18–24M, 2T, 3T. Specify your required size range in the RFQ. Crotch ease is critical — infant overalls must accommodate a standard disposable diaper at each size. Add approximately 3–4 cm to the crotch seam length vs an adult trouser equivalent at the same waist size.
