Bar mop GSM grades, stripe colour-coding and construction — huck weave vs terry compared for restaurant, hotel and foodservice buyers sourcing in volume.

Quick Answer: Commercial bar mops should be 100% cotton terry at 350–500 GSM for standard foodservice use, and 500–600 GSM for heavy-duty restaurant and hotel kitchen programmes. Stripe colour coding is a HACCP compliance requirement — red for hazardous surfaces, blue for general, white for food-contact — not a decorative choice. Standard bar mop size is 40×40 cm (16×16 inches) for US foodservice and 35×35 cm for EU specifications. Bar mops from Pakistan are available in all stripe configurations at volume for distributors in the USA, UK and EU.

Bar Mops: The Institutional Standard for Commercial Kitchen Cleaning

Bar mops are not kitchen towels. They are heavy-duty cleaning cloths designed for continuous use in commercial food service — restaurants, hotels, catering operations and institutional kitchens. For procurement managers sourcing bar mops from Pakistan, the key specifications differ fundamentally from retail kitchen towel programmes: GSM is higher, construction is 100% cotton terry, and stripe colour coding is a functional rather than decorative specification.

Pakistan produces bar mops for export to the USA, UK, EU, Middle East and Australia at commercial scale, supplying foodservice distributors, hotel operators and institutional buyers.

Construction and GSM

Standard construction: 100% cotton terry, loop pile both faces (double-sided), or loop one face / flat weave reverse. The terry construction maximises absorbency for liquid cleanup in commercial kitchen environments.

GSM range:

GradeGSMApplicationPack standard
Light commercial350–400 GSMLow-traffic café, bistro12 per pack
Standard commercial450–500 GSMMid-volume restaurant, bar, hotel12 per pack
Heavy duty / institutional550–650 GSMHigh-volume kitchen, catering, healthcare12–24 per pack

Heavier GSM absorbs more liquid per cycle and withstands more wash cycles before failing structurally. For programmes specifying 100+ wash cycles (commercial laundry at 71°C), minimum 450 GSM is appropriate. Below 400 GSM in commercial laundry typically results in rapid degradation of the loop pile.

Stripe Colour Coding — the Functional Standard

Stripe colour coding on bar mops communicates the intended cleaning zone — critical for HACCP compliance in food service operations. This is a functional specification, not a decorative one.

Stripe colourCleaning zoneStandard in
No stripe (white only)General kitchen surfacesUniversal
Blue stripeFood contact surfaces, equipment wipe-downUSA, UK, EU
Red stripeNon-food contact, floors, drainsUSA, UK, EU
Green stripeAllergen-segregated cleaning (some programmes)EU, UK hospitality
Yellow stripeChemicals/cleaning productsSome EU programmes

For USA foodservice distribution: white-only and white/blue stripe are the volume sellers. For UK and EU programmes: colour-coded sets are increasingly specified for HACCP documentation compliance.

When specifying a stripe bar mop programme, confirm: stripe width (standard 1–2 cm border stripe or through-weave stripe), stripe yarn type (dyed warp vs jacquard), and whether the stripe is visible on both faces.

Loop End vs Cut End

Loop end (standard): The towel is hemmed on all four sides. Loops are intact — no loose fibres. This is the universal standard for food service.

Cut end: The pile is sheared at the cut edges — softer initial feel but the cut pile sheds lint with early washes. Not suitable for food contact surfaces. Rarely specified for professional food service.

For all commercial kitchen and foodservice programmes, specify loop end construction exclusively. Kitchen towels for retail may use cut-end finishing for softness, but bar mops should always be loop end.

Standard Sizes

USA13×13 inches (33×33 cm)Bar towel square — counter wiping
UK / EU40×40 cm or 50×70 cmLess standardised than USA
Australia40×60 cm or 50×70 cmFollows UK dimension conventions

USA foodservice distributors typically specify in inches. Always confirm whether your buyer uses US or metric dimensions before confirming the size run.

Packing for Commercial Distribution

Bar mops are sold to foodservice distributors in case quantities. Standard pack formats:

  • 12 pieces per pack (polybag, bulk fold)
  • 24 pieces per case for high-volume distribution
  • 60 or 120 pieces per master carton (loose bulk) for laundry/rental operators

Do NOT retail-pack bar mops in header card or individual polybag format — foodservice buyers do not want retail packaging.

Certification Requirements

Bar mops for food service do not have mandatory food-contact certification (they are not packaging), but buyers in the USA and EU increasingly specify:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — ensures dyes and finishes are free from harmful substances. Required for most UK and EU foodservice chain buyers.
  • GOTS — if organic cotton is specified (premium segment only).
  • ISO 9001 — factory-level quality management; required for large institutional contracts and GPO supply in the USA.

For aprons and coordinated kitchen linen programmes, the same certification scope typically applies across all items in the programme.
