Beach Towel Print Techniques: Reactive, Jacquard & Velour for Retail Buyers

Reactive print, jacquard and velour cut-pile beach towel techniques — colour durability, design capability and cost for retail and wholesale buyers.

Quick Answer: Beach and pool towels use three primary print methods: reactive print on terry or velour base (unlimited colour range, near-photographic quality, 300–500 GSM), jacquard weave (design woven into the terry structure, no surface print — inherently colour-fast), and velour cut-pile (smooth printed surface for sharper detail, premium feel). Reactive-printed velour beach towels are the dominant format in USA and EU retail programmes. For colour fastness to pool water, specify ISO 105-E03 testing in the quality requirements. Beach and pool towels from Pakistan are available in all three techniques at retail and wholesale volumes.

Beach Towel Print: More Than Decoration

The print technique on a beach or pool towel is not merely aesthetic — it determines how the colour holds after 50+ wash cycles, how much design detail can be reproduced, how the towel performs during beach or poolside use, and what it costs to produce at scale. For procurement managers and retail buyers sourcing beach and pool towels from Pakistan, understanding the three primary techniques — reactive print, jacquard weave, and velour cut-pile — is essential for writing an accurate specification.

Reactive Print (Rotary or Digital Screen)

What it is: Dye is applied to the surface of a pre-woven or pre-knitted terry fabric using rotary screens or digital inkjet heads. The reactive dye bonds chemically with the cotton fibre during the fixation step.

Design capability: Near-unlimited. Reactive printing on terry can reproduce photographic imagery, gradients, typography, complex multi-colour patterns and brand artwork with high fidelity. The limiting factor is the texture of the terry pile surface, which introduces a slight pixel-blur effect at very fine detail (below 1 mm line width).

Colour fastness: Excellent when correctly processed. Reactive-dyed terry towels achieve ISO 105-C06 Grade 4–5 (washing) and Grade 4 colour fastness to light (ISO 105-B02). Colour fastness to chlorinated pool water is a specific test (ISO 105-E03) — specify this for pool-deck programmes. See certifications and compliance standards for the full RSL requirements by market.

GSM range for beach towels: 300–500 GSM. Beach towels are intentionally lighter than bath towels to reduce weight in beach bags and dry faster in the sun.

Velour face option: Many reactive-print beach towels use a velour (cut-pile) face — the pile is cut flush for a smooth surface that takes print detail more cleanly than a loop-pile surface. The reverse retains terry loops for absorbency. This construction is the retail standard for fashion beach towels in the USA, UK, EU and Australia.

Minimum order quantity: 500–1,000 pieces per colourway for rotary screen; 300 pieces per artwork for digital inkjet (no screen cost).

Lead time premium: Artwork approval adds 5–7 days to the development sequence. Photochromic or special-effect inks add further lead time.

Best for:

  • Branded retail beach towels for fashion, sportswear and lifestyle brands in the USA, UK, EU
  • Resort gift shop programmes requiring high-visibility custom artwork — download the artwork specification template to submit files in the correct format
  • Hotel pool towel programmes where a distinct branded look is required — hotels also sourcing institutional bath towels can consolidate pool and bath linen into one shipment
  • Promotional beach towels at seasonal volume

Jacquard Weave

What it is: The pattern is woven directly into the fabric structure using a jacquard loom — individual warp and weft yarns are controlled independently to create a design in the weave. No post-weaving print is applied.

Design capability: Geometric patterns, two-tone designs, logos, text and simple figurative motifs. Complex photographic imagery or gradients cannot be reproduced in jacquard — the design is limited to the number of available weave positions and typically to two or three colours (the ground colour and the weft/warp accent colours).

Colour fastness: Excellent — inherently superior to surface printing because the colour is in the yarn, not applied to the surface. Yarn-dyed jacquard towels achieve Grade 4–5 on all colour fastness tests. No risk of chlorine-induced colour loss — a significant advantage for pool towel programmes.

Durability: The design never fades, peels or washes out — it is structural. Jacquard beach towels are the long-life specification choice.

GSM range: 350–550 GSM for beach towels. Jacquard construction is slightly heavier than plain reactive-print terry at equivalent pile height due to the additional weft yarn density.

Cost: Higher than reactive-print terry at small volumes (jacquard loom setup), but competitive at scale (no screen or ink cost per repeat).

Best for:

  • Hotel pool towel programmes (colour fastness to chlorine is critical) — pair with institutional bath towels for the full pool-area linen programme
  • Retail programmes where design integrity after 100+ washes is a selling point
  • Branded corporate gifts and premium promotional applications
  • Middle East, EU and Japanese markets where a classic woven look is preferred over bold print aesthetics — request a quote with your programme volume for jacquard FOB pricing

Velour Cut-Pile (Solid and Fashion Colours)

What it is: A terry construction where the loop pile on the face of the towel is cut flush, creating a smooth, velvet-like surface. No print or pattern — uniform colour on both faces (or velour face, terry reverse).

Design: No printed pattern. Colour is the design. Solid-colour velour beach towels rely on yarn dyeing for colour — typically with reactive or vat dyes for colour fastness.

Colour fastness: Excellent for yarn-dyed solid velour. As with reactive-print, chlorine fastness must be specifically tested for pool applications.

Hand feel: The smoothest hand of all three constructions — velour is soft, tactile and photographs beautifully for retail product images.

Print compatibility: Velour face is the ideal base for reactive printing (see Section 1 above). Many of the most commercially successful beach and pool towels combine a velour face (for print quality and hand feel) with a terry-loop reverse (for absorbency).

GSM range: 300–500 GSM for beach and pool applications.

Best for:

  • Premium solid-colour beach towels for fashion retail in the USA, UK and EU
  • Velour-face reactive-print beach towels — the dominant format for resort gift shops globally
  • Pool towels where towel soft hand is a premium offering point

Certification Requirements for Beach & Pool Towels

MarketRequired certificationNote
USA retail (Target, TJX, etc.)OEKO-TEX Standard 100Must cover dyes and prints
UK retailOEKO-TEX Standard 100Reactive dyes — EU REACH compliance
EU retailOEKO-TEX Standard 100REACH — restricted azo dye list compliance mandatory
Middle East resort / retailOEKO-TEX preferredISO 9001 for hotel tenders
Australia retailOEKO-TEX Standard 100APCO compliance for packaging
Japan / South KoreaOEKO-TEX Standard 100Japanese specific standards (JIS) also sometimes required

Print-specific REACH note: Reactive print dyes must comply with the EU Restricted Substances List (RSL) — specifically the prohibited azo dye list under EC 2002/61. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 testing covers this, but only if the certificate applies to the complete finished article including printed fabric.
