Incoterms Explained: FOB vs CIF for Pakistan Textile Exports

Quick Answer: FOB (Free On Board) means the buyer assumes risk and freight cost once goods are loaded onto the vessel at the origin port — FOB Karachi is the standard incoterm for Pakistan textile exports. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) means the seller arranges and pays for shipping and insurance to the destination port, making it better suited to first-time importers unfamiliar with freight management.

Why Incoterms Matter

Every international textile order requires agreement on who pays for what — and who bears the risk of loss or damage between Pakistan and your destination port. Incoterms standardise this agreement. The two most common in textile trade are FOB and CIF.

FOB (Free On Board)

Under FOB, the seller is responsible for goods until they are loaded onto the vessel at the origin port. From that point, the buyer assumes all risk and cost.

CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight)

Under CIF, the seller arranges and pays for freight and minimum insurance to the destination port. Risk still transfers at the origin port — the buyer bears any loss during transit despite the seller arranging the shipment.

• Who pays freight: Seller (cost built into unit price)
• Risk transfers: At origin port (same as FOB)
• Insurance: Minimum cover only — often insufficient for actual cargo value

CIF appears convenient but gives you less control and often costs more when the freight markup is factored into unit pricing.

Which Should You Use?

For most B2B buyers sourcing from Pakistan:

• Use FOB if you have an established freight forwarder and understand shipping logistics
• Use CIF only if you are new to international sourcing and need a simplified first order

As your sourcing programme matures, transitioning to FOB almost always reduces total landed cost and gives you better visibility over your supply chain.
