Pillow Cover Fabric Guide: Percale, Sateen, Cotton & Microfibre for Buyers

Pillow cover fabrics — percale, sateen, cotton and brushed options compared for retail, hotel and institutional buyers sourcing from Pakistan.

Quick Answer: Pillow cover fabrics fall into five categories: percale (plain weave, matte and crisp, 200–400 TC), sateen (satin weave, lustrous and soft, 300–600 TC), Oxford (2×2 basket weave, casual, 200–300 TC), brushed cotton/flannel (warm, winter positioning), and budget polyester microfibre (ultra-smooth surface). Percale is the most common hotel and institutional specification; sateen is the dominant UK and EU retail construction at 300–400 TC. Pillow covers from Pakistan are available in all five constructions from certified woven bed linen mills.

The Pillow Cover Specification: Often Underspecified, Always Noticed

The pillow cover is the item in a bed linen set that the consumer handles first. It is the piece most closely scrutinised on the retail shelf and the item that communicates the quality of the whole programme. For procurement managers sourcing pillow covers from Pakistan, specifying fabric type and weave structure is as important as specifying thread count — two pillow covers at 400TC in percale and sateen are different products aimed at different markets.

Pakistan's woven bed linen mills produce all five primary pillow cover constructions at certified mill level for retail, hotel and institutional programmes globally. This guide explains the performance profile of each.

Percale Weave (Plain Weave, 1-Over 1-Under)

Construction: The simplest possible weave structure — each warp yarn passes over one weft yarn, then under the next. The resulting fabric is balanced, stable and produces a matte, slightly textured surface.

Feel: Crisp, cool and smooth. Percale's tight, even structure creates a "cool to the touch" sensation that is particularly valued in warmer climates and by consumers who sleep hot. After multiple washes, a good percale pillow cover becomes progressively softer without losing its crisp character.

Thread count range: 200–600TC in percale. The weave structure limits the practical TC ceiling at single-ply — above 600TC, the weave becomes very dense and the fabric loses some of its breathability advantage.

Durability: Excellent. The plain weave structure is among the most dimensionally stable in textiles — minimal shrinkage, low pill tendency and consistent appearance across 100+ wash cycles.

Best for:

  • Hotel programmes in warm climates (Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia) where cool-touch performance is a premium
  • USA, UK and EU mid-market retail where crisp durability is the expectation for bedsheets and duvet covers in the same set
  • Institutional and contract programmes where long service life per laundry cycle is the primary metric

Sateen Weave (4-Over 1-Under)

Construction: Four warp yarns float over one weft yarn before passing under. This construction brings more warp yarns to the surface, creating a lustrous sheen.

Feel: Smooth, silky and slightly warm to the touch. Sateen's surface has a visual richness that reads as luxurious — particularly in white and pale pastel colours where the sheen is visible from a distance.

Thread count range: 300–800TC in sateen. The floating yarns allow higher effective thread counts, but at the upper end, yarn quality becomes the dominant quality factor — multi-ply twisted yarns inflating TC numbers are more common in sateen production than in percale.

Durability: Good. The surface yarns can snag if the weave is open or yarn quality is low. Specify ring-spun combed cotton for sateen pillow covers — the longer staple reduces pilling and snagging.

Best for:

  • UK, EU and Northern European retail where sateen's lustrous surface drives gift and premium shelf appeal
  • Premium hotel programmes (4-star and above) in the USA and Europe where visual luxury is the differentiator
  • Department store gift set programmes where pillow covers, duvet covers and bedsheets are displayed together and the surface sheen matters

See the full bedsheet thread count guide for how percale and sateen compare across the TC scale for the full bed linen set.

Cotton Jersey (T-Shirt Weave / Knit)

Construction: A knitted fabric — cotton yarn knitted into interlocking loops rather than woven. Fundamentally different from percale or sateen.

Feel: Stretchy, soft and casual. Jersey pillow covers feel like a high-quality T-shirt. The stretch (typically 20–40% in the cross-grain) makes them easy to put on and adjust.

Thread count: Jersey is not measured in TC — weight is expressed in GSM (grams per square metre). Standard jersey pillow covers run 150–220 GSM in single-jersey or interlock construction.

Durability: Good at correct wash temperature (40°C recommended; 60°C causes accelerated shrinkage). Not suitable for commercial high-temperature institutional laundry.

Best for:

  • Consumer retail in the USA, UK and Australia where casual lifestyle positioning is the brand identity
  • Children's bedding programmes where the soft, forgiving stretch is a practical benefit
  • NOT suitable for hotel or institutional laundering programmes using 60°C or above

Cotton Flannel (Brushed Cotton)

Construction: A plain or twill woven cotton fabric that has been brushed on one or both faces to raise a short pile — creating the soft, fuzzy, warm texture associated with flannel.

Feel: Extremely soft and warm. Flannel is the cold-climate winter bedding standard in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Canada and northern USA.

Weight: Measured in GSM — standard flannel runs 150–220 GSM finished. Heavier than percale at equivalent TC due to the raised pile.

Seasonality: Flannel is fundamentally a seasonal product — demand peaks September–February in the northern hemisphere. Programme planning must account for seasonal order windows. See the certifications and compliance page for fibre content and origin labelling requirements, particularly for the EU where "flannel" requires a specific construction specification on the care label.

Best for:

  • UK, Irish, Canadian, German and Scandinavian winter retail programmes
  • Cold-climate residential retail in the northern hemisphere
  • NOT suitable for hotel or institutional use due to laundering shrinkage profile

Microfibre (Polyester)

Construction: A knitted or woven fabric from ultra-fine polyester filament yarns. Entirely synthetic — no cotton content unless blended.

Feel: Smooth, cool-dry touch, lightweight. Not the same tactile quality as cotton at equivalent price points — consumers generally distinguish the difference immediately.

Durability: Good for consumer retail wash cycles. Fast-drying. Easier care than cotton (30°C wash usually sufficient). Does not require ironing.

Certifications: For EU retail, verify that REACH restricted substances compliance is confirmed for the polyester dyes and finishes — OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers this. See the certifications and compliance page for the scope required.

Best for:

  • Value retail programmes in the USA, UK and EU where price point is the primary driver
  • Easy-care pillow covers for student accommodation, budget hospitality
  • NOT suitable for programmes targeting premium or luxury positioning — the synthetic feel profile does not deliver at mid-market pricing upwards
