AAMI PB70 Protection Levels

It is referenced in procurement tenders by US hospital systems and GPO contracts, and is increasingly used internationally as a baseline reference alongside EN 13795 (EU equivalent).

EN 13795 (EU Equivalent)

For surgical gown procurement serving UK and EU hospitals, EN 13795 specifies performance thresholds for surgical drapes, gowns and cleanair suits. The standard uses different test methods from AAMI PB70 but is roughly equivalent in protection hierarchy. Key requirements: linting (cleanliness), microbial penetration dry (resistance to bacterial filtration), microbial penetration wet (the critical test for surgical gowns), tensile strength and burst strength.

Fabric Constructions by Protection Level

SMS / SMMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) — Non-Woven

Construction: Non-woven polypropylene fabric combining a spunbond outer face, one or two meltblown barrier layers, and a spunbond inner face. The meltblown layer provides the fluid barrier; the spunbond layers provide tensile strength and comfort.

GSM range: 30–60 GSM. Higher GSM within SMS delivers better barrier performance and durability through sterilisation cycles.

Sterilisation: Compatible with gamma irradiation, ethylene oxide (EtO) and electron beam sterilisation — the standard methods for disposable surgical textiles.

Appropriate for: Level 2, 3 and 4 disposable surgical gowns. The dominant material for single-use gowns globally.

Critical note on "disposable": In many lower-middle income markets and NGO programmes, SMS gowns described as "single-use" are laundered and re-used — a practice that degrades the barrier layer and creates a patient safety risk. If the buyer's end facility launders "disposable" gowns, specify reusable woven construction instead.

Woven Cotton (100% Cotton or Cotton-Polyester Blend)

Construction: Plain or twill weave fabric, typically 150–250 GSM. The fabric is tightly woven to provide some liquid resistance, but woven cotton alone does not achieve AAMI Level 3 or 4 barrier performance without a laminate or membrane treatment.

Performance: Woven cotton surgical gowns meet AAMI Level 1 or 2 at most without treatment. They are appropriate for examination gowns, visitor cover-ups, isolation precaution gowns in low-risk environments, and patient gowns.

Sterilisation: Compatible with steam autoclave sterilisation — this is an advantage over SMS non-wovens (which degrade under autoclave steam). Reusable woven gowns in a validated hospital laundry and sterilisation programme can deliver a significantly lower cost-per-use than disposable SMS for low-fluid-risk procedures.

Best markets for woven gowns: UK NHS (traditional preference for reusable woven; sustainability requirements), Middle East hospital systems (where laundry cost is lower than disposables logistics), and NGO procurement programmes where supply chain simplicity favours reusable items.

Woven Polyester (Anti-Static and Cleanroom Grade)

Construction: Tightly woven 100% polyester or polyester-cotton blend with anti-static treatment. Used in cleanroom and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments, not surgical suites.

Best for: Pharmaceutical manufacturing cleanrooms (ISO Class 5–8), electronics production, food processing — not clinical surgical use.
