Ring-spun 180 GSM single jersey is the primary specification for US and EU mid-market retail; carded 160 GSM is the promotional and mass-market tier. GSP+ duty-free access gives EU buyers a 12% landed-cost advantage on Pakistan-origin T-shirts versus Chinese-sourced equivalents at MFN rates — typically 12% EU import duty. Step 1 — Define Fabric Weight and Construction
Fabric weight (GSM) is the primary specification decision. For promotional programmes, 130–160 GSM single jersey is standard. Retail programmes typically run 160–200 GSM. Premium and fashion positions require 200–260 GSM for substantial handfeel. Workwear runs 220–300 GSM for durability. Specify ring-spun cotton for retail and above — it is softer and stronger than carded cotton at the same GSM. For fashion positioning, request combed ring-spun cotton.

Step 2 — Specify Fit Architecture
OEM fit development requires a size chart with measurement tolerances — chest, body length, sleeve length and armhole depth at each size point, with a tolerance column (typically ±1 cm on chest, ±1.5 cm on length). Specify the fit silhouette: regular/classic, slim-fit, oversized/boxy, or athletic (tapered waist). Pakistan knitwear factories can grade from XXS–5XL. Submit a reference garment with the first enquiry to shorten the development sample round.
Step 3 — Decoration Method Selection
- Screen printing: most cost-effective for 500+ pieces per design; 1–8 spot colours; not suitable for photographic images.
- DTG (direct-to-garment) digital printing: unlimited colours; ideal for small runs and photographic artwork; slightly raised print hand.
- Embroidery: premium finish; specify stitch count and thread colour by Pantone number.
- Heat transfer / sublimation: works on polyester-rich fabrics; cotton sublimation requires polymer coating.
- Discharge printing: removes dye to create a vintage soft-hand print; only compatible with reactive-dyed cotton.
Step 4 — Certification Requirements
For EU and UK retail: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is expected as baseline; GOTS certification if making organic claims. For US retail: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and CPSIA compliance for any products marketed to children. For corporate uniform programmes: BSCI or Sedex social audit on the producing factory. Specify required certifications in the sourcing quote form to match mills with your scope.
Step 5 — Sampling and Approval Sequence
Development sample (DS) confirms fit and construction. Lab dip confirms colour against your Pantone reference. Pre-production (PP) sample is the legally binding bulk reference — do not approve bulk production until PP is signed off in writing with dated photographs.
Step 6 — Packing Specification
Retail pack: individually polybaged, size label, barcode; inner carton by size for easy DC sorting. Promotional pack: solid-colour/size cartons, bulk-polybag or no-poly depending on end use. Specify the folding standard (flat fold vs rolled, facing direction) to match your retail planogram.
Indicate whether you need swing tags, size stickers, care label language (English-only or multilingual for EU markets). These are specified at order confirmation, not after PP approval.
