GSM (grams per square metre) is the weight measurement of knit fabric and the most consequential specification decision when sourcing T-shirts from Pakistan's knitwear mills. A 150 GSM tee and a 240 GSM tee are categorically different products serving different markets — not two versions of the same thing. Getting the GSM wrong at specification stage costs you at the sampling phase or, worse, on the shop floor when the product fails customer expectations.

Pakistan's knitwear cluster spans Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad, with mills capable of knitting single jersey from 130 GSM to 340 GSM and heavier constructions beyond that. Understanding which range serves your programme prevents the single most common specification mistake in basic knitwear sourcing.

130–160 GSM — Lightweight / Promotional Tier

Ideal for: Promotional give-aways, event T-shirts, summer beach retail, fast-fashion seasonal items.

At this weight, single jersey is semi-sheer in white. The drape is soft and fluid — appropriate for summer layering and promotional contexts where durability is not the primary brief. A 130–150 GSM tee typically uses carded cotton (or poly-cotton) to achieve the weight economy.

Practical limits: White fabrics in this range require a separate underlayer in photographic or event contexts — visible through light. Wash retention across 20+ cycles drops noticeably compared with heavier tiers. Not suitable for logo-heavy workwear or retail programmes with a return-rate guarantee.

Markets: Primarily USA promotional, South American event retail, Middle East summer retail. EU sustainable retail is moving away from this range as fast-fashion regulation tightens.

160–180 GSM — Standard Retail Tier

The volume tier. Most mass-market T-shirt retail in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia operates in this range. A 165–175 GSM ring-spun cotton tee is the industry benchmark — enough weight for a clean drape and adequate opacity in white, light enough for comfortable wear in most seasons.

Print compatibility: Excellent. Screen print, discharge, plastisol and water-based inks all perform well at this weight. Heavier print deposits (specialty inks, multi-layer discharge) benefit from the stability of 175+ GSM.

Wash retention: 20–50 washes without significant shrinkage or pilling when the construction uses ring-spun cotton with proper pre-shrinking at the mill level. Specify pre-shrink finish if your market is washed-garment retail (USA, Australia).

Certifications typically required: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class II for adult retail. GOTS if selling under an organic positioning. WRAP or BSCI/Sedex for social compliance.

180–220 GSM — Premium Retail / Fashion Tier

Above 180 GSM, a T-shirt transitions from commodity to premium positioning. The fabric has a perceptibly substantial hand-feel when lifted from a shelf or a product page image — which matters for fashion retail where tactile quality is part of the brand message.

Construction nuance: Most premium T-shirts in this range use ring-spun or combed cotton. Combed cotton removes short fibres and impurities before spinning, producing a smoother, more consistent yarn with better pilling resistance. Specify combed if your programme sells above mid-market.

Decoration advantage: Heavier, tighter fabric holds fine embroidery details and woven patches better than the standard tier. A 200 GSM tee with a woven chest badge sits differently than a 160 GSM version of the same design.

Markets: UK fashion retail, EU premium basics (Germany, France, Netherlands), USA DTC brands, Australian specialty retail. Corporate uniform programmes that present quality as a brand signal.

220–280 GSM — Heavyweight / Workwear Tier

At 220+ GSM, a T-shirt is a workwear or premium lifestyle product. The fabric is opaque in white, structurally rigid enough to hold shape through repeated industrial laundering and warm enough to serve as a standalone layer in cool conditions.

Specific applications:

• Construction and industrial workwear (220–240 GSM, often poly-cotton for soil release)
• Branded merchandise for premium lifestyle brands (240–260 GSM ring-spun)
• Thermal underlayers (280 GSM and above, waffle or thermal knit variants)
• US and EU distributor stock programmes for safety-critical applications

Laundry durability: Specify 30+ wash cycle retention if the programme involves professional laundry (healthcare, industrial). Pakistan mills can supply formal wash-test data on request.

Ring-Spun vs Carded Cotton — Impact on GSM Perception

Two T-shirts at the same GSM can feel very different depending on yarn type. Ring-spun cotton is spun with a slower, tighter process that produces a finer, stronger yarn with a smoother surface. Carded cotton is faster and cheaper — the yarn is slightly irregular and the fabric has a coarser hand-feel.

Practical effect: A 180 GSM ring-spun tee feels noticeably more substantial than a 180 GSM carded tee at the same weight. If your brief is premium positioning, ring-spun is the specification — not a higher GSM. Specify "ring-spun cotton" explicitly on the Tech Pack; "cotton jersey" without further specification will default to carded at cost-competitive mills.

Combed ring-spun (combed before ring spinning) is the premium tier — softer again, with further pilling resistance. Budget for a 5–12% material cost premium over standard ring-spun.

Certification Requirements by Market

USA retail: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the minimum expectation for major retailers and platforms. Children's products (up to 36 months) require Class I (baby-safe) certification. Workwear programmes with chemical exposure should specify ZDHC compliance at the dye-house level.

EU / UK retail: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or equivalent REACH compliance documentation. Any organic claim requires GOTS certification with transaction certificates. The EU Green Deal textile regulations (coming into force progressively through 2025–2027) will require greater traceability — start building chain-of-custody documentation now.

Australia: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the standard retail expectation. GOTS for organic positioning. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has enforced against unsubstantiated "organic" and "sustainable" claims — certify before you claim.
