Swaddle muslin sourced from Pakistan is available in two primary constructions — single-layer plain weave (80–120 GSM, suited for warm-climate and summer retail) and double gauze (two thermally-bonded layers, 110–160 GSM), which dramatically improves in softness with each wash cycle and is the gift-market standard in the UK, USA and EU. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 — the strictest product class for items in direct contact with infant skin (0–24 months) — is mandatory for all swaddle muslin entering EU, UK, USA and Australian retail; GOTS certification (requiring organic cotton scope at both the spinning mill and the fabric mill) is additionally required for any organic cotton claim. Pakistan's cotton weaving mills produce swaddle muslin in 100% cotton, GOTS-certified organic cotton and bamboo-cotton blends, with reactive print — the only print method that meets Class 1 substance limits — available across standard sizes of 100×100 cm, 120×120 cm and 47"×47" (119×119 cm USA standard).
Step 1 — Construction Selection: Single Layer vs Double Gauze
Single-layer muslin: plain weave, 80–120 GSM, very lightweight and breathable — suited for warm climates and summer retail. Double gauze: two layers of single muslin thermally bonded together, 110–160 GSM — significantly softer, more durable and dramatically improves in feel with each wash cycle. Double gauze is the standard for premium gift-market swaddle programmes in the UK, USA and EU.
Step 2 — Fibre Content Options
| Fibre | Construction | OEKO-TEX | GOTS eligible | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton | Single layer or double gauze | Class 1 | Yes (if certified) | Standard retail |
| GOTS organic cotton | Single layer or double gauze | Class 1 | Yes | Premium, eco-retail |
| 70% bamboo viscose / 30% cotton | Double gauze | Class 1 | No (bamboo not GOTS) | Ultra-soft, premium |
| 100% bamboo | Single layer | Class 1 | No | Eco-premium, specialty |
Step 3 — Certification Requirements
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 is the minimum for all baby muslin products in the EU, UK and USA. For organic claims: GOTS certification is required — both the fabric mill and the garment factory must hold GOTS scope certificates, and a transaction certificate is issued for each order. Retailers increasingly require GOTS + OEKO-TEX combination for the premium baby segment. Confirm certification requirements in the sourcing quote form.
Step 4 — Print Specification
Reactive print only on OEKO-TEX Class 1 swaddle muslin — pigment print uses binders that increase formaldehyde residue and may not meet Class 1 limits. Specify print coverage (% of fabric area), design repeat size and colour count. Digital reactive print: for photographic or detailed designs with minimum repeat constraints. Rotary screen print: for geometric, simple and stripe designs at volume — lower cost per unit for large runs.
Step 5 — Sizing and Packaging
Standard swaddle: 100×100 cm (compact infant swaddle), 120×120 cm (standard swaddle blanket), 47"×47" (119×119 cm — USA standard). Multi-pack sets: 3-pack or 5-pack in a gift box — specify box dimensions, insert card printing requirements and window or solid-top box. Muslin pouch: organic cotton drawstring bag for premium single-piece presentation. Care label: machine wash 40°C, do not tumble dry on first wash — specify in all relevant languages.
