Tank tops from Pakistan serve four distinct market applications — fashion basics (100% cotton single jersey, 140–180 GSM, the dominant segment), athletic performance (polyester interlock or mesh, moisture-wicking finish, 130–170 GSM), workwear underlayers (65C/35P CVC, 160–200 GSM, minimum shrinkage after repeated industrial wash), and promotional programmes (economy carded cotton, 130–160 GSM, the price-competitive tier). Neckline and armhole specification is the most commonly underspecified element: the neckline depth and rib band width, the armhole drop and curve, and the hem finish (single-needle, twin-needle, or coverstitch hem) all affect garment positioning and consumer perception — a 1 cm difference in armhole drop changes the garment from casual to athletic-cut. Pakistan's knitwear mills produce all these variants for international buyers with 30–45 day production lead times from PP approval.
Step 1 — Fabric Selection
| Fabric | GSM | Stretch | Application | Markets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single jersey (100% cotton) | 140–180 | 2-way | Fashion basics, promotional | USA, EU, Middle East |
| Rib knit (1×1) | 160–220 | 4-way | Athletic, fashion, retail | USA, UK, EU, Australia |
| Modal-cotton blend | 160–200 | 2-way | Premium retail, eco | UK, EU, Canada |
| Performance polyester | 120–160 | 4-way | Athletic, performance | USA, EU, Australia |
| Bamboo-cotton blend | 150–180 | 2-way | Eco-positioned premium | UK, EU, Australia |
Step 2 — Neckline and Armhole Specification
Neckline: crew neck (standard), scoop neck (fashion/women's), deep V-neck (fashion), square neck (women's). Neckline binding: rib binding (self-fabric or contrast rib strip sewn to neckline edge — specify width 1.5–2 cm), turned-and-stitched (neckline fabric folded and top-stitched — clean, economy option), bound with separate tape. Armhole: straight armhole (standard, suitable for all constructions), curved armhole (fashion, requires template confirmation at DS stage).
Step 3 — Side Seam vs Seamless Construction
Side seam construction is standard and compatible with all decoration methods. Seamless (tubular knit): no side seam; superior comfort for athletic use; requires a circular knit machine programme for each size — minimum order per size applies. Specify construction at enquiry stage — seamless requires dedicated programming and is not interchangeable with side seam styles.
Step 4 — Decoration and Branding
Screen print: ideal for cotton jersey; avoid on fine rib knit over 2 colours (print stretches with fabric). DTG digital print: unlimited colour detail; compatible with cotton jersey and modal blends. Embroidery: chest and back placement; use fill stitch on rib knit (outline-only embroidery on rib pulls the fabric). Heat transfer: compatible with performance polyester and modal blends.
Step 5 — Certification Requirements
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 for children's and infant programmes; Class 2 for adult apparel. GOTS certification for organic cotton and bamboo-blended tanks. GRS for recycled polyester. BSCI/Sedex/WRAP for retail social compliance. Specify required certifications in the sourcing quote form.
