Denim Weight Guide: 6oz to 14oz — What Buyers Need to Know
Denim weight guide — 6oz to 14oz fabric weights, stretch constructions and durability explained for buyers sourcing jeans and denim trousers from Pakistan.
Quick Answer: Denim fabric weight for jeans is measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). Lightweight 6–8 oz suits summer and stretch styles. Mid-weight 10–12 oz is standard for everyday jeans. Heavyweight 12–14 oz is used for raw denim, workwear and cold-weather styles. To convert: 1 oz/yd² = approximately 33.9 GSM. Use the Textile Calculator for instant weight conversions.
How Denim Weight Is Measured
Denim weight is expressed in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) — the standard in the USA — or converted to grams per square metre (GSM) for European markets. The conversion is: 1 oz/yd² ≈ 33.9 GSM. As a working reference: 6 oz ≈ 200 GSM, 10 oz ≈ 340 GSM, 14 oz ≈ 475 GSM.
Weight is measured on the greige (undyed, unwashed) fabric before any washing or finishing process. Post-wash shrinkage reduces the finished weight slightly — specify pre-wash weight in your Tech Pack and confirm the expected finished weight with the factory.
Pakistan's denim weaving mills in Karachi and Lahore operate ring-spun and open-end spinning with full wash-house capability, producing denim from 6 oz to 14 oz at certified mill level for denim jeans sourced by international buyers.
6–8 oz — Lightweight Denim
Typical range: 6 oz (200 GSM) to 8 oz (270 GSM)
Construction: Fine ring-spun yarns (30s–40s count) in a 3×1 right-hand twill. The open weave structure produces a drapey, flexible hand feel — closer to a shirting fabric than classic denim.
Wash options: All wash types apply — enzyme, stone, bleach and acid — but heavyweight distressing washes are cosmetically lost on light fabric; stick to enzyme wash, bleach wash or clean rinse finishes.
Best markets:
- Southeast Asia retail (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines) where humidity makes heavy denim impractical
- Middle East spring/summer programmes
- Fast fashion players with sub-8-week seasonal cycles
- Tropical climate markets year-round
Key specification: Weigh-in tolerance ±5%. At 6 oz, a 10% error puts you into a different feel tier — specify tightly.
9–11 oz — Mid-Weight Denim (Most Common)
Typical range: 9 oz (305 GSM) to 11 oz (375 GSM)
Construction: Standard 3×1 or 2×1 twill, ring-spun or open-end, with or without elastane. This is the construction behind the majority of retail jeans globally — the fabric weight that most buyers and consumers recognise as "standard denim."
Wash options: Full range — stonewash, enzyme, acid, bleach, laser. Distressing, whiskers and abrasion are achievable at any intensity in this range.
Best markets:
- USA, UK, EU, Canada — all mainstream retail segments
- Wholesale and branded programmes
- Corporate workwear (non-industrial)
- School and uniform programmes
| Weight oz | GSM | Application | Wash compatibility | Markets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6–8 | 200–270 | Summer, fast fashion, tropical | Enzyme, bleach, clean rinse | SE Asia, Middle East, fast fashion |
| 9–10 | 305–340 | Mass retail jeans, casual, slim-fit | All wash types | USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia |
| 10–11 | 340–375 | Premium retail, branded programmes | All wash types including heavy distress | USA, UK, EU, Middle East |
| 12–13 | 405–440 | Workwear, heritage, durable retail | Stone, enzyme; limit acid/bleach | USA workwear, heritage brands |
| 13–14 | 440–475 | Selvedge, raw denim, military | Raw/rinse only or light stone | USA heritage brands, Japan export |
12–14 oz — Heavyweight Denim
Typical range: 12 oz (405 GSM) to 14 oz (475 GSM)
Construction: Heavier yarn count (10s–20s), tighter twill, often ring-spun for authentic slub texture. This is the construction used for workwear dungarees, heritage jeans and selvedge programmes.
Wash constraints: Heavyweight denim does not respond well to aggressive acid wash or bleach — the dense construction resists the wash penetration needed for uneven effects. Stone wash and enzyme wash work well; raw (unwashed) or lightly rinsed finishes are preferred by heritage buyers.
Best markets:
- USA heritage and denim specialist brands
- Industrial workwear — painters, mechanics, utility
- Japan export programmes (selvedge buyers specify by mill and loom type)
- European heritage and slow-fashion retail
Stretch Denim: Adding Elastane
Stretch denim adds 1–8% elastane (Lycra/Spandex) to the weft yarn:
- 1–3% elastane: Comfort stretch for slim-fit and straight-fit jeans. The fabric retains its denim look and drape. Most mid-weight retail programmes use this range.
- 4–8% elastane: High-stretch for super-slim, jegging and fitted silhouettes. The fabric stretches significantly and recovers — but denim character is reduced.
Elastane content interacts with wash outcomes: high-stretch fabrics can lose recovery after aggressive wash cycles. Specify wash testing protocol (number of wash cycles at X°C) in your Tech Pack when elastane exceeds 3%.
Wash Types by Oz Tier
Wash choice is constrained by fabric weight:
| Wash type | 6–8 oz | 9–11 oz | 12–14 oz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enzyme wash (bio-stoning) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Stonewash | Limited | ✓ | ✓ |
| Acid wash (chlorine bleaching) | ✓ light only | ✓ | Limited |
| Bleach wash | ✓ | ✓ | Limited |
| Laser distressing | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Raw / rinse only | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ (preferred) |
Heavy distressing (deep whiskers, severe abrasion) on 6–8 oz denim produces inconsistent results because the lighter fabric wears through rather than abrades — avoid specifying this combination.
Certification Requirements
| Certification | Requirement | Market |
|---|---|---|
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Minimum for retail denim | USA, UK, EU, Australia |
| GOTS | Required for organic cotton denim label claims | EU, UK, USA natural retail |
| BSCI / Sedex SMETA | Social audit for factory | EU brands, UK retailers |
| WRAP | Social compliance | USA brands |
| ZDHC MRSL | Dye-house chemical compliance | Premium EU and USA brands |
ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) compliance at the wash house is increasingly requested by EU and USA premium brands. Verify ZDHC signatory status of the wash facility, not just the garment factory, when sourcing washed denim.
