Fleece blanket GSM from 150 to 400gsm — polar fleece, anti-pill and sherpa options with weight-to-application guidance for retail and institutional buyers.

Quick Answer: Fleece blanket GSM ranges from 150–200 GSM for lightweight travel and promotional use, 200–280 GSM for standard retail programmes, and 300–400 GSM for premium and institutional supply. Construction type matters as much as GSM — 200 GSM anti-pill fleece outperforms 300 GSM standard fleece in long-term pilling resistance. Use the Textile Calculator to convert GSM to oz/yd² for US market specifications.

Fleece Blankets: GSM Is Not the Only Performance Indicator

GSM is the most commonly cited specification for fleece blankets — but GSM alone does not determine performance. A 200 GSM anti-pill fleece blanket can outperform a 300 GSM standard fleece blanket in long-term softness retention and pilling resistance. For procurement managers sourcing fleece thermal blankets from Pakistan, the specification must address construction type, anti-pill treatment, and intended laundering conditions alongside GSM.

Pakistan manufactures fleece blankets in all major constructions for retail buyers in the USA, UK, EU, Middle East and Australia, and for institutional buyers in hotels, airlines and care facilities.

Fleece Construction Types

Anti-Pill Fleece (Standard Retail Grade)

Construction: A knitted polyester fabric that has been brushed on one or both faces to raise a short, soft pile. Anti-pill treatment (by enzyme washing or mechanical process) prevents the loose fibres from forming balls (pilling) on the surface after washing.

Why anti-pill matters: An untreated fleece blanket will pill visibly after 3–5 washes — the surface develops small fibre balls that make the product look worn. Anti-pill treatment extends the visual life of the blanket significantly. For retail buyers, anti-pill should be specified as a minimum standard for any blanket expected to last 50+ wash cycles.

Pilling test: ISO 12945-2 (Martindale method) — specify minimum Grade 4 (slight change) after 2,000 cycles for anti-pill retail grade.

GSM range: 150–320 GSM.

Sherpa Fleece

Construction: A double-faced fabric — one face is a smooth, flat loop (resembling sheep wool from a distance) and the reverse is a flat fleece or jersey. The loop face gives sherpa its textural warmth and premium hand-feel.

Performance: Sherpa is the warmest fleece construction per unit weight because the loop structure traps significantly more air than a flat fleece pile. A 200 GSM sherpa is warmer than a 280 GSM anti-pill fleece.

Best for: Premium retail positioning in the USA and UK, winter blankets, couch throws. Significantly higher production cost than anti-pill fleece at equivalent GSM.

Polar Fleece

Construction: A heavier double-napped fleece — pile on both faces, denser than standard anti-pill fleece. The double-nap construction provides maximum thermal insulation.

GSM: 280–450 GSM. The heaviest construction in the fleece category.

Best for: Cold-climate retail (Canada, Northern EU, Russia), outdoor blankets, camping and utility applications. Not appropriate for promotional or lightweight bedding programmes.

Coral Fleece

Construction: An ultra-fine, short pile fleece with a velvety surface texture. Very soft initial hand-feel. The name refers to the surface resemblance to coral texture.

GSM: 150–250 GSM.

Best for: Asia Pacific markets, Middle East (air-conditioned environments where light weight is preferred), children's bedding programmes. Popular in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan and South Korea.

Important note: The GSM values above apply to standard anti-pill fleece. For sherpa and polar fleece, reduce the thermal classification by one row — a 200 GSM sherpa performs thermally like a 280 GSM anti-pill.

Pilling Resistance by Grade

Pilling is the defining quality failure mode in fleece blankets. Before approving any fleece programme, require ISO 12945-2 pilling test results:

Pilling grade (ISO 12945-2)Visual descriptionAcceptable for
Grade 5No changePremium retail (USA, UK luxury)
Grade 4Slight surface fuzzingStandard retail (USA, UK, EU, AU)
Grade 3Moderate pillingAcceptable only for promotional
Grade 2 or belowHeavy pillingNot acceptable for any retail programme

Minimum acceptable: Grade 4 after 2,000 Martindale rubs for standard retail. Specify Grade 4 or above at the mill PP sample approval stage.

Custom Print on Fleece

Sublimation print (transfer printing using heat-activated dye-sublimation inks) is the primary print method for fleece blankets. It produces full-coverage, photographic-quality prints directly on the polyester pile surface.

Sublimation requirements:

  • Minimum 95% polyester content (sublimation does not bond to cotton)
  • Flat fleece (anti-pill flat face) — the print surface must be smooth for even ink transfer
  • White or light-coloured base fabric only — dark base fabrics cannot show sublimation prints

For comparison with non-polyester blankets, see the cellular blanket guide which covers 100% cotton construction for healthcare applications.
